Thrift Store Tray Before and After

My cousin is getting married on the Outer Banks this Friday.  She found these trays online and wanted to have something similar to use for her place cards, without the $59.99 price tag.  I sent her a picture of a tray I had purchased at a thrift store for $4.25 to see if it would work, all it needed was some paint.  She said it would, so I got to work recreating a old and yucky tray into something cute and beachy.

Both trays are from Shore Chic.

....and the yucky before pictures of the thrift store tray.
Our tray measured 17" x 24" x 3".

This is how it looked after a coat of primer and then I sanded down some of the rough spots.

After two coats of white Satin paint.

I had a quart of blue paint (Valspar Rain Dance) forever in my garage that was from an old project and thought the color would look similar to the blue on the $59.99 tray.  The technique I used to paint on the blue paint is called dry brushing.  You dip your brush in the paint and then wipe it off on a cloth or in my case, a paper towel.  It took quite a few coats of blue to get the color intensity that I wanted but it was worth it in the end.

The finished tray.
The tray will be on a table with a white linens and the colors of the reception are royal blue and chartreuse green with hydrangeas on the cake, which I think the tray will tie in nicely to the blue color of the tray.

Not too bad for a $55.74 savings!!!
I can't wait for the wedding, my sister and my Mom will be here this week, and we drive up on Friday morning.  I am doing the bride's makeup so I am so excited for that too,
(..and the kiddos are staying home with Dad.  Woohoo, girl's road trip!!).
Should be lots of fun and I'm sure I will have some good pictures, I love the Outer Banks!

Inspiration Friday No.13 ~ Master Bedroom

A few years ago we purchased a "grown-up" master bedroom set.  It's pretty but it's big, painted black, and very traditional.  Even with the adult-like furniture, I have failed miserably on creating a relaxing and inviting master.  It's more like clothes, shoes, and dust bunnies everywhere.

One issue I have is that I'm not sure which bedroom we should be in.  Currently we are in the 15 x 17 ft. room (the 4th bedroom) at the back of the house that is more private and has more natural light but is lacking one closet and a bathroom.  The idea when we moved into this house was to add a master bathroom off of the this room (see map below), creating a true master suite... but we need new windows and a roof in the next few years, so that $35,000 master bathroom addition isn't happening anytime soon!

The traditional master is smaller, darker and I kind of hate that room.  The bathroom is horrific...we're talking yellow tile, peeling wallpaper, and the vanity is missing a drawer.... oh and the floor is stick on tile!!!  I HATE that bathroom.   So I don't know what to do.  For one, if we did move back into the "master bedroom," our furniture doesn't all fit without us having to suck it in and squeeze around, so we will have to lose the chest of drawers.  It's dark, like depressing dark and then again, the bathroom.  Hate that bathroom, oh did I say that already?!

Anyway, onto the pretty stuff.  If I could have a master it would look something like one of these...

I am not in love with this head board and twin beds (cute for a guest room)
but the overall colors are pretty.

I am kinda loving the upholstered headboard look that is so popular right now.  I've actually thought of throwing some batting and fabric over our current headboard and see what I get.  Not sure about the nailhead trim, never played with that before!

A small, intimate sitting area would be awesome... and a nice little escape from the kids!! :)

I will never be able to have this size bathroom in the master (swooning over the tub)...

More pictures from Coastal Living that I am loving right now...

With this aqua door, it's like you would just come home everyday singing "Oh happy day, oh happy day"!!!

Yeah, I think I could live here!

Happy Friday!  I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend!

Before and After... (almost)

Today was a busy day, lots of updating at my mother-in-law's house for her living room and dining room makeover.  First, I will show you some before pictures and what has been updated so far.

This is what we started with.  A once loved floral print sofa that no longer fit into my mother-in-law's desire for a more light and modern look.  Luckily she was able to find it a good home at her mom's house!

The walls were white and missing personality!!

New addition...the sofa was found for $175 at a garage sale.
It is Storehouse brand and is in great condition... (she did attempt to use a slipcover on the floral sofa from http://uglysofa.com/, but that was quickly forgotten when she found this sofa at such a good deal!)

The coffee table was $25 found on Craigslist.

Yep, I said $25!!! This is a heavy, REAL wood table.  You can not beat it!!!

...the room with new paint from Martha Stewart, Myrtle Blossom.
Such a pretty blue, it immediately gave the room new life.

...and today the windows looked like this.  There was no visual separation from this room and the sunroom on the back of the house.  So I ran around all day putting the pieces together to give the two windows in this room a new life.

...and the new and improved windows in this living room and dining room.  Thanks to my husband and father-in-law that so happily put up two bamboo shades, two curtain rods, and two pictures!

Oh and the crown molding was installed today!  My father-in-law has been very busy.  I love that the men in our lives are happy to help us!!

(pictures were taken with my iPhone, I apologize for the poor quality)

I absolutely LOVE how it turned out, and more importantly my mother-in-law is happy with it!

The break down of where the new items were purchased from is:

Curtain rods-  already owned and spray painted black

Bamboo shades-  Home Depot

White curtains-  B. Smith at Bed Bath and Beyond

Curtain rings-  Bed Bath and Beyond

Floral prints-  TJ Maxx

Thanks for looking!!
